Every person employed in Slovenia usually has compulsory health insurance through their employer. On this basis, he or she is covered by the public health insurance system and has the right to receive healthcare services in Slovenia. Under certain conditions, an employed person can also have his or her family members covered by the health insurance.

You can order through our website health insurance card, European Health Insurance Card and edit reimbursement of the cost of health services provided abroad, if the legal conditions are met. The procedures are straightforward and applications are prepared in accordance with the legislation in force and the practice of the competent institutions.

This is insurance for foreigners who are resident in Slovenia but are not covered by the compulsory health insurance system of the Health Insurance Institute. In Slovenia, you can arrange health insurance for your family members through yourself. These are usually children and a spouse, civil partner or parents. Family members can be covered regardless of whether they live in Slovenia or abroad.

In all cases, the persons to be insured must be family members, are not compulsorily insured in their country of origin or in another country. If they are already covered by compulsory insurance there, it is not usually possible to join the Slovenian system. In principle, children are primarily insured through their (working) mother if they live with her abroad.

If the health insurance for the insurance provider is terminated (for example, when the job ends), the health insurance for family members is automatically terminated too. In such a case, the insurance for the institution and the family members must be re-arrange or re-register, when the legal conditions are met.

You need a health insurance card to receive healthcare in Slovenia. You can arrange this yourself in person at the Health Insurance Institute. If you have not yet received your health insurance card, or if you have lost it or it is damaged, you can order one yourself. here. You will only get your card free if it is your first time ordering it, if it is more than 10 years old, if you have changed your personal name or surname, or if the chip is faulty. Otherwise, the cost of ordering a new card is approx. €5.50 (payable at the competent Insurance Office).
But you need a European Insurance Card if you are being treated abroad - in the EU. You can also order one free of charge hereThe European Card is usually valid for one year, unless your insurance terms expire earlier. This means that if your residence permit is valid for less than one year, your European Insurance Card will be valid for the duration of the permit. Once you have renewed your permit and your employer has sorted out the insurance conditions, you can order a new EHIC.

You can get reimbursed for unplanned healthcare abroad if you apply to the Health Insurance Fund for reimbursement. The costs are reimbursed at the same rate as would have been recognised by the foreign insurer or at the average price of services in Slovenia.
The above does not apply to Australia and tourist clinics in Croatia. In addition, no reimbursement will be made in the case of medical co-payments, transport costs, cruise ship treatment or the cost of a planned birth abroad.
